Discount Calculator
Find the sale price and amount saved after applying a percentage discount.
TL;DR — Discount Calculator: A discount calculator finds the final price of an item after a percentage reduction is applied to the original price, and shows the absolute amount saved. Use it to verify sale prices, comparison-shop and stack discounts.
What is the Discount Calculator?
A discount calculator finds the final price of an item after a percentage reduction is applied to the original price, and shows the absolute amount saved. Use it to verify sale prices, comparison-shop and stack discounts.
How to use the Discount Calculator
- Enter the original (pre-discount) price.
- Enter the discount percentage.
- Read the savings amount and the final sale price.
Formula
Savings = Original × (Discount% ÷ 100) Final = Original − Savings
Original = original price · Discount% = percentage discount
Worked example
A jacket priced $120 with a 35% discount. Savings = 120 × 0.35 = $42. Final price = $120 − $42 = $78.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage (divided by 100), then subtract that from the original price to get the sale price.
How do stacked discounts work?
Stacked discounts apply in sequence, not added together. A 20% discount followed by an extra 10% on the discounted price gives 28% off total, not 30%.
Is the discount applied before or after tax?
In most jurisdictions, discounts are applied before sales tax / VAT. Use the discounted price as the taxable base.
How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?
Discount % = (Original − Final) ÷ Original × 100. Use Cal44's Percentage Calculator (mode 3) for this.
What's a true "good" discount?
Compare the sale price against the typical market price (not just MRP). A 50% discount off an inflated original price isn't necessarily a deal.
