What is the VAT / GST / Sales Tax Calculator?

A tax calculator adds a percentage tax to a net price (forward calculation) or extracts the tax component from a gross price (reverse calculation). Use it for VAT in Europe, GST in India / Australia / Canada, sales tax in the US, and any other consumption tax. Cal44 supports any tax rate.

How to use the VAT / GST / Sales Tax Calculator

  1. Choose direction: add tax (from net) or remove tax (from gross).
  2. Enter the price.
  3. Enter the tax rate as a percentage.
  4. Read the tax amount and the gross or net price.

Formula

Add tax: Gross = Net × (1 + rate ÷ 100) Tax = Gross − Net
Remove tax: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) Tax = Gross − Net

rate = tax percentage. For removing, use the same rate that was originally applied.

Worked example

Add 20% VAT to £80 net: Gross = 80 × 1.20 = £96. Tax = £16. Remove 18% GST from ₹118 gross: Net = 118 ÷ 1.18 = ₹100. Tax = ₹18.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 + (rate ÷ 100). At 20% VAT, divide by 1.20.

What is the difference between VAT, GST and sales tax?

VAT (Value Added Tax) and GST (Goods and Services Tax) are charged at every stage of supply with input credits. US sales tax is a single-stage tax charged at retail only. Mathematically, Cal44's calculator handles all three identically.

What is the standard VAT rate?

UK: 20%. EU varies (Germany 19%, France 20%, Sweden 25%). India GST: 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%. US sales tax: 0–10% depending on state and locality.

Can it handle compound or stacked taxes?

Apply taxes in sequence. For a 10% state tax plus 2% local tax (compounded), use 10% then 2% on the result, not 12% directly.

Is the calculator certified for invoice generation?

No — Cal44 estimates tax for everyday use. For invoices and statutory reporting, use certified accounting software in your jurisdiction.
