What is the Salary Calculator?
A salary calculator converts pay between time bases — hourly to annual, monthly to weekly, freelance day rate to equivalent salary. It enables direct comparison of job offers, freelance rates and part-time vs full-time pay expressed in different units.
How to use the Salary Calculator
- Enter the pay amount.
- Choose the time basis of that amount (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, annual).
- Adjust hours per week (default 40) and weeks per year (default 52) if needed.
- Read the equivalent amount for every other time basis.
Formula
Annual = Hourly × HoursPerWeek × WeeksPerYear
Standard full-time assumption: 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year = 2,080 hours/year
Worked example
A $35/hour rate at 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. Weekly = $1,400. Monthly ≈ $6,067. Annual = $72,800.
Frequently asked questions
How many work hours are in a year?
Full-time in the US is typically 2,080 hours per year (40 hours × 52 weeks). Subtract holidays and PTO for actual worked hours.
Is this gross or net pay?
Cal44's salary calculator works in gross (pre-tax) pay. Use the Income Tax Estimator separately to estimate net.
How do freelancers convert day rate to salary?
Multiply day rate by working days per year (typically 220–230 after holidays, PTO and admin overhead) to get a fair salary equivalent.
Should freelance rates match salary?
No — freelance day rates should be higher to cover benefits, employer taxes, downtime between contracts and self-employment expenses. A common multiplier is 1.5–2× the equivalent salaried rate.
How do I compare a salary in two countries?
Convert both to a common currency, then adjust for cost-of-living and tax differences. Nominal salary alone is misleading.
